Emin Aghayev, Switzerland

E-learning faculty

Dr. Emin Aghayev, MD, MSc, is a senior research fellow at the University of Bern’s Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine. Specialising in medical registries, health services research, and musculoskeletal outcomes, he has extensive experience in clinical data analysis. He holds a medical degree from the University of Vienna and an MSc in Biomedical Engineering from Bern.

Benjamin Blondel, France

Course faculty

Dr. Benjamin Blondel, MD, PhD, is a Professor of Spine Surgery at Aix-Marseille University and a practicing surgeon at CHU Timone in Marseille, France. His research focuses on spinal surgery advancements, including minimally invasive techniques and sagittal balance analysis. He has co-authored guidelines for spinal surgery management during the COVID-19 pandemic. ​

Yann-Philippe Charles, France

Course faculty

Dr. Yann-Philippe Charles is a Professor of Spine Surgery and Chair of the Department of Spine Surgery at the University of Strasbourg, France. He earned his medical degree from Heidelberg University. Currently serving as Vice President of EUROSPINE, his research focuses on spinal deformities and surgical techniques.

Wolfgang Hitzl, Austria

E-learning faculty

PD Dr. Wolfgang Hitzl, MSc, MSc, is Head of Biostatistics at Paracelsus Medical University, Salzburg, and affiliated with the University Clinic of Ophthalmology. A mathematician and statistician, he has collaborated in medical research for over 20 years, specializing in applied machine learning and modern statistical methods. He has 283 PubMed-listed publications and an h-index of 54.

Aria Nouri, United Kingdom

Course faculty

Aria Nouri earned his medical degree from the Medical University of Lodz and a master's from the University of Toronto. He completed postdoctoral training in neurosurgery at Toronto, Yale, and Cincinnati, followed by clinical neurosurgical training in Geneva. In 2023, he completed a spine fellowship at Cambridge. His interests include degenerative cervical myelopathy and neurotrauma.

Miranda van Hooff, Netherlands

Course faculty

Miranda van Hooff, MSc, PhD, is a senior researcher and clinical epidemiologist at Radboud University Medical Center and research theme lead at Sint Maartenskliniek. With a background in physiotherapy and clinical epidemiology, she focuses on treatment outcomes, registries, and decision support in spinal disorders. She has extensive experience in coordinating multicentre research and securing research grants.

Carmen Vleggeert-Lankamp, Netherlands

Carmen Vleggeert-Lankamp, MD, MSc, PhD, is a renowned neurosurgeon and spinal surgeon at Leiden University Medical Centre, director of the Spine Research Group, and a leader in spine care evaluation, radiculopathy research, and integrating machine learning into spine care, while actively contributing to teaching, supervising PhD students, and serving on the boards of CSRS Europe, the Netherlands Society for Neurosurgery, and EUROSPINE.
